Some people say they love getting older... I wasn't one of those people. I used to hate looking at myself in the mirror. I always saw wrinkles, sagging skin, and gray hair. I was constantly reminded of how old I was, and how much I had lost over the years. My wonderful husband of over 35 years passed away from a heart attack just two years ago... Our three children were all in their 20's and 30's and were busy with their own children and their own lives. I felt lonely, depressed, and hopeless.
Honestly, I felt like I had no purpose, no joy, and no connection. When you're young you have a whole life to look forward to, but as you get older that feeling of hope for the future slowly fades away. I'd call up my children but I didn't want to be a burden.
I decided I needed to see a therapist.
But finding a good therapist wasn't easy. I had to wait for months to get an appointment, and when I finally did, I was shocked by how expensive it was. I had to pay hundreds of dollars per session, and my insurance didn’t cover much of it. I felt like I was wasting my money and my time.
The Therapists Advice Didn't Help
The therapist was nice enough, but he didn’t seem to understand me or my problems. He would ask me questions that I had no answers to, or give me advice that I had no interest in following. He would tell me to be more social, to join a group, to make new friends. But I didn’t want to do any of that. I didn’t want to meet new people, I wanted to be with my old ones, the friends I had known for years that had passed on.
Even after the therapy sessions, I still felt like I was alone, unwanted, and worthless. I felt like I had nothing to offer, nothing to contribute, nothing to share.
What's clear to me now is I was suffering from low self-esteem, a common but often ignored problem that affects millions of seniors. Low self-esteem is when you have a negative view of yourself and your abilities. It can be caused by various factors, such as aging, retirement, loss of loved ones, or social isolation.

I'd Almost Given Up Hope When I Discovered Something Really Interesting.
But then, something amazing happened. I discovered a simple, easy, and fun way to improve my mental health, boost my confidence, and transform my life. I discovered the Switch Self Love Journal.
It was a gift from my daughter, who had heard about it from a friend. She said it was a 91-day journal that helps you practice self-love by completing daily prompts that encourage positive thinking, gratitude, and self-compassion. She said it was scientifically proven to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and to enhance happiness, confidence, and well-being. She said it was especially beneficial for seniors, as it helps prevent cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s. She said it was the best thing I could do for myself every day.
Could The Solution Really Be This Easy To My Low Self Esteem?
I was extremely skeptical at first. I didn’t think a journal could make such a difference in my life. I thought it was just another gimmick, another fad, another waste of time. I’ve bought 'self-help' books before that just gathered dust on my nightstand.
My therapist friend Linda told me this journal was designed by clinical psychologists using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). She said it wasn't just a diary, but a tool to rewire my brain.
I asked Linda, 'How do I know this will actually work for me? I’m 78, not 25.'"
Linda told me that this protocol isn't for everyone. She said it is specifically designed for people who are:
Stuck in 'Survival Mode': You feel numb, invisible, or like you're living on auto-pilot.
Willing to reflect for 5 minutes: You don't need hours, but you need consistency.
Ready to silence the 'Inner Critic': You are tired of that nagging voice in your head telling you you aren't enough
So I took it out of the drawer and opened it. I was surprised by how beautiful it was. It had a soft cover with a colorful design and a catchy slogan: “Switch to Self Love”. It had 91 pages, each with a different prompt and a space to write. It also had a bookmark, a pen, and a sticker sheet.
I decided to start with the first prompt. It said: “Write down three things you love about yourself”. I thought, that’s easy. I love my… my… my…
I realized I couldn’t think of anything. I couldn’t think of a single thing I loved about myself. I felt a pang of sadness and shame. How could I be so negative? How could I be so hard on myself? How could I be so unloving?
That's when I decided I was going to commit to completing the 91 days of prompts.
Here's What Happened:
Day 7: I'm not going to lie, the first week was the toughest. The journal brought up a lot of emotions that I had buried deep down and there were things in my psyche I didn't want to face. But I stuck with it. I noticed the beginning of a difference in how I was feeling about myself. I was a little more positive and optimistic. I noticed a slight change in my thoughts from being constantly negative to being a bit more positive.
Day 15: At this point I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the journal. I looked forward to writing in it every day. I liked the variety of prompts and the challenge of finding something new to appreciate about myself. I felt a growing sense of self-esteem. I felt more compassionate and supportive of myself. I decided to stop putting myself down! I decided to start praising myself for my efforts and achievements.
Day 30: I was amazed by how much I changed in a month. I felt like a different person. I felt more confident and happy. I smiled more, laughed more, and had more fun. I decided to stop avoiding challenges or opportunities. I decided to start pursuing my passions and dreams. I used to think I was too old to try new things... Not anymore! I signed up for a painting class, something I always wanted to do but never had the courage. I made some new friends who shared my interests. I felt more alive and fulfilled.
Day 65: I was excited about how much I learned in two months. I discovered new things about myself and the world. I expanded my knowledge and curiosity by reading new books and taking up new hobbies. I also shared my insights and opinions with others. I joined an online community of seniors who were also interested in self-improvement and personal growth. I made some new friends who supported and inspired me. I felt a strong sense of belonging and purpose. I no longer felt bored or stagnant.
Day 91: I was grateful for how much I changed in three months. I felt like a new person. I felt more confident, happy, and fulfilled. I finally loved myself. I realized I didn’t need anyone else to make me feel good about myself. I just wish I'd found this journal sooner!!
After I completed the Switch Self Love Journal, my children and grandchildren noticed a huge difference in me.
They said I looked so much younger, happier, and healthier.
They were amazed and inspired by my transformation. I also noticed that they visited me more and wanted to be around me more often. I guess when you're full of negativity you don't realize how off putting that can be to your loved ones. People naturally don't want to be around negativity.
This is a vicious cycle because having negative thought patterns leads to more loneliness which then leads to more negativity. It's hard to escape that loop, but believe me, if I can do it with the help of this journal then anyone can!
Why Does The Switch Self-Love Journal Work So Well For Mental Health Issues?
It works because it was developed by a team of clinical psychologists with real world experience in treating mental health issues. It’s really easy and straightforward. Each day, the journal provides a series of prompts and exercises that focus on different aspects of your life, such as childhood memories, significant life events, or hopes and dreams for the future.
The prompts are designed to be simple and easy to answer, requiring only a few minutes of your time, typically less than 7 minutes per day.
Whether you're young or old, a man or a woman, the Switch Self-Love Journal can help you improve your mental health and well-being. It can help you overcome negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are holding you back from living your best life. I now recommend it to everyone I come in contact with and I had to write this blog article to get the word out there!

Thank you, Switch Research, for helping me embark on this journey! I am so excited to learn more about myself and watch myself grow. I can’t wait to gift the freebie to my friend and start the other journals.” - Anna, 65
How Much Does It Cost?
When Linda first told me about this, I was worried. Therapy costs anywhere from $100 to $300 for a single session. While therapy is always a good idea, I knew I couldn’t afford that every week on my fixed income.
I expected this clinical journal to be expensive, maybe $100 or more.
But Linda explained that Switch Research is a team of psychologists—not a big pharmaceutical corporation. Their mission is to make mental health tools accessible to seniors who might otherwise be forgotten.
Because of that, they have priced the Self-Love Journal at just $39 (that's 50% off the regular price).
That is less than the cost of a single week of coffee for a tool that lasts 3 months.
However, Linda gave me a piece of advice.
She told me, 'Lisa, don't just buy it because it's cheap. This journal is not a magic wand.'
She explained that because this is a clinical tool based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), it works best for people with specific emotional patterns—like struggling with an 'Inner Critic' or feeling stuck in 'Survival Mode.'
She said, 'The company actually built a free 1-minute quiz you can do to find out if the Self-Love Journal is right for you.'
They want you to be successful with the protocol, not just buy another book that sits on your shelf.
